Mold is a naturally occurring fungus that grows in the form of multicellular filaments called hyphae. There are over 100,000 different types of mold, and growth can occur practically on any surface or type of product, indoors or outdoors.
Mold may appear on the surface in various colors and textures, often black, orange, white, green or purple. However, not all such discolorations are mold, and you could be observing other biological stains such as enzymatic or mineral discolorations, or non-biological discolorations.
While mold does not typically have a meaningful effect on the performance or lifespan of a pallet, it can be problematic in other ways including an unsightly appearance, stain or damage to products placed on the pallet, potential food contamination or health concerns, and customer dissatisfaction.
Mold spores are everywhere in the environment all the time, and all it takes is the combination of oxygen, proper temperature, an organic food source, and moisture for mold to grow. Even the touch of a fingerprint can serve as the organic food source on any surface or material!
